Mia P. Manansala
Her Filipino-American culinary mysteries won the Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards for best first novel.
Biography
Mia P. Manansala has done something unusual in crime fiction: she made a Filipino-American kitchen the center of a bestselling mystery series. Her debut, Arsenic and Adobo (2021), won the Agatha Award for Best First Novel, then took the Anthony and Macavity awards in the same category, a rare sweep for a debut.
A writer and book coach from Chicago, Manansala built the Tita Rosie's Kitchen series around Lila Macapagal, an amateur sleuth who helps run her aunt's struggling Filipino restaurant in the fictional town of Shady Palms, Illinois. Each title pairs a crime with a dish, from Homicide and Halo-Halo to Blackmail and Bibingka and Murder and Mamon, and each book ends with recipes pulled straight from the story.
The food is the point, not the garnish. She told Rolling Stone Philippines that she wanted readers to see Filipino food as more than lumpia, and that cooking, in her books, is how a family says what it cannot say out loud. Her sleuth bakes to think, and the cases tend to begin at the family table, inside a tight community of meddling aunties, old grudges, and second chances.
That warmth is deliberate. Cozy mystery has long been a traditionally white corner of the genre, and Manansala's wins for a Filipino-American series were noted as a real shift; she is active in Crime Writers of Color and had already earned grants and awards for crime writers of color before her debut. Each installment has drawn starred trade reviews, and the series ran to six books, closing with Death and Dinuguan in 2025.
Her subjects are family and food, immigrant community and belonging, wrapped inside a genre built for comfort. For a list of living Filipino authors, Manansala is the one who took the coziest shelf in the bookstore, made room on it for Shady Palms, and proved a recipe could carry a plot.
